The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, a private foundation that was formed in the philanthropic legacy of Virginia Galvin Piper, recently announced the results from its latest round of grantmaking. Between November 2012 and January 2013, the trust awarded $4.6 million in grants to nonprofits in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Although this cycle of funding primarily targeted healthcare and medical research groups, it also benefited the trust's other key focuses, including arts and culture, education, children, religious organizations and older adults.

"We must understand the ways healthcare can improve patient outcomes through innovative practices. Adelante Healthcare, John C. Lincoln Health Network and Scottsdale Healthcare exemplify the leadership required to advance all facets of healthcare to new levels," said Judy Jolley Mohraz, president and CEO of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.

The trust granted $2.8 million to support enhancement projects at these three facilities. The Scottsdale Healthcare center received a $2 million grant for an expansion of its cancer treatment division. Adelante Healthcare received a $325,000 grant to enhance its pediatric care unit and the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation was selected for a $500,000 grant to develop a specialized center for geriatric care.

Nonprofit organizations that hope to benefit from large grant-giving opportunities can improve their chances of being selected for awards when they use nonprofit financial management programs. These solutions can generate data-driven reports for various stakeholders.
