Newman's Own Foundation recently granted 13 public broadcasting networks a total of $2.4 million over the next two years to cover various costs that will ensure these media outlets can continue to stimulate open conversations about important civic issues. The philanthropic organization was established by Paul Newman in 2005 and its work is funded entirely from product proceeds.
Newman's Own manufactures a range of food items, from cereal and drinks to pizza and salad dressing, with all profits going toward it philanthropic goals of achieving long-term, sustainable change in four areas of focus - empowerment, encouraging charitable giving, nutrition and improving the lives of children with life-limiting conditions.
Through this round of grantmaking, the Newman's Own Foundation provided funds to WSHU Public Radio in Connecticut, WPBT in Florida, WNET/CHANNEL 13 in New York, WHYY in Philadelphia, WAMC Northeast Public Radio in New York, St. Louis Regional Public Media - KETC/Channel 9, National Public Radio, KCTS Television in Washington state, KCET Community Television of Southern California, Detroit Education Television Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Connecticut Public Broadcasting and American Public Media/Minnesota Public Radio.
"Paul Newman believed that the independent voice played a critical role in making our world a better place," said Robert Forrester, president of Newman's Own Foundation. "He was a strong supporter of public broadcasting, and we are proud to maintain that support for today and into the future."
Foundations and organizations that provide annual funding might benefit from nonprofit accounting software, which can help board members audit funds and make sure the correct amounts are being distributed to various programs each year.
