Dutch government gives grant to women's group
March 29, 2013
In a move that is relatively unprecedented, a national government recently donated money to a nonprofit group dedicated to helping women achieve equality worldwide. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands gave a $1.77 million grant to the BSR HERproject.
The nonprofit group teaches women and girls about reproductive health in 8 different countries across the world, traveling to factories and farms to spread the word. So far, the group has taught more than 200,000 women about their bodies and best practices through peer-to-peer talks and follow-up meetings.
"This project has a real and immediate impact on women's lives by giving them practical, high-quality information," BSR HERproject director Rachael Yeager explained.
BSR is also involved in a number of other projects across the globe. The group has a presence in 300 countries and workers with various international groups to ensure sustainability and justice for all individuals.
"This support from the Netherlands will help us with HERproject's goal to reach one million female workers by 2015," Yeager added, saying that the money would be put directly toward initiatives like promotion of youth groups, further research in a number of new communities and new partnerships with countries.
