Changes to the Manitoba sales tax
Effective July 1, 2013, the Manitoba Retail Sales Tax (RST) rate increased to 8%. This tax is calculated on the selling price of most goods and some services, before the GST is applied. New companies created in this release use the new rate of 8%.

Track insurable vacation hours required on Record of Employment (ROE) slips
Employers are required to record the employee's work history on a Record of Employment (ROE) form, including the employee's insurable vacation hours. To comply with this requirement, Sage 50 Accounting 2013 records and tracks the number of total insurable vacation hours taken for you, and enters them directly in box 15A on the ROE form that you create in Sage 50.

If you do business in US dollars and have customers who prefer to be billed in US dollars, you can now record, process, and track credit card payments in US dollars in Sage 50. In this way, Sage 50 not only allows you to accommodate your customer needs, these transactions are also recorded more accurately when they are in a single currency. Integrated with Sage Payment Solutions1, you can also switch between multiple Sage Payment Solutions accounts and choose to process foreign credit card payments in a Canadian dollar or US dollar merchant account.

This version of the Sage 50 Business Intelligence2 includes the Report Designer, a Microsoft® Excel® add-in that expands the existing functionality of the Report Manager. View graphical trend forecasts of key business data (available only in Sage 50 Quantum Accounting)
The Trends Forecast dashboard illustrates your company's projected performance in a set of four graphs, and provides trend forecasts of your business' key performance data or indicators (KPIs).
Based on your company's historical data, the Trends Forecast dashboard maps out the trends it finds in your company's data. The dashboard is easily accessible in the program and allows you to adjust your plans quickly to changes in your business.
Employees – Remain Accurate and Compliant
Look up and review posted paycheques
When you need to verify the information on a posted paycheque or if you need to make a correction, you can look up and display the paycheque quickly using the Look Up tool.
In the payroll journal, you can look up and make corrections to paycheques made in the current and previous year. You can also bring up individual paycheques by drilling down in the payroll reports.
Post paycheques into future years
This new feature makes it convenient for employers to record a post-dated paycheque in a new year, and make your records more accurately reflect your business process. Instead of making multiple manual entries, you can now record paycheques in the Payroll journal and date them in the next calendar year without closing off the current fiscal year. You can also look up these paycheques to make corrections at any time.
Change to HST in PEI
The HST Update Wizard helps PEI clients convert easily to the new HST by creating new tax codes.

Hide Accounts With Zero Balances On Financial ReportsFor reporting flexibility, select this new report option if you want to omit accounts with zero balances on balance sheets and income statements.
Print Cheque Log for Previous Year You can print and review Cheque Log reports for the previous year and verify cheque activity for the current and previous fiscal year.

Show Active Records in the Home Window The Home window displays both active and inactive records in the records list until you clear the box Include inactive … at the bottom of each list.
The exclusion of inactive records from this list improves your work flow and analysis and enables you to view only the relevant active accounts, vendor, customers, employees, items and services, and projects in the Home Window listing.
Modify Remittance Transactions with the Proper Audit Trail No matter where they are recorded, all transactions that affect remittances are now consistently tracked and reported in the Remittances journal and on the remittance report. The transactions in the Remittances journal can also be adjusted and any errors properly corrected.
Track and Pay Remittances Using Any Payment Method Sage Simply Accounting has expanded the number of payment methods you can record against a remittance payment. You can now record remittance payments made with cash, cheque, credit card, or direct deposit.
Improved Payroll Journal Window The changes to the payroll journal window increase the flexibility in the way you pay your employees and your overall efficiency.

Improved Payroll Cheque Run Window1The redesigned window allows you to improve your work flow, pay employees quickly in the payroll cheque run while withholding, tracking, and remitting source deductions and employer contributions. New list options also allow you to select unpaid employees automatically by pay period end date and pay period frequency.

Report Multiple Quebec Employee Benefits on RL-1 Slips1To be compliant with Revenu Quebec and the Canada Revenue Agency, you can now track Quebec employee benefits more accurately by setting up additional payroll incomes to use a new Quebec benefit income type. These new payroll incomes will be reported on the employees' Relevé 1 (RL-1) slips but not on their T4 slips.
To set up these new payroll incomes to track Quebec benefits, in the Type column, click the magnifying glass and select Benefit (Que) from the list.
Calculate Withholdings on Payroll Advances1To be compliant with the Canada Revenue Agency, this version of Sage Simply Accounting allows you to pay an employee an advance and have the appropriate withholding amounts automatically calculated and withheld from the advanced amount.
If you are providing a payroll advance that is taxable, enter this amount in the Advances box in the payroll journal. If you are providing a loan that is not taxable, enter the amount in the Loans box.
Existing payroll advances will be converted to non-taxable loans when you upgrade to this version of Sage Simply Accounting.
Update Multiple Employee Personal Tax AmountsYou can efficiently update the federal and provincial personal tax credits for all your employees at one time or just for a group of employees you've selected. To access this feature, in the Maintenance menu, select Update Employee Claims.
If you subscribe to a Sage Business Care plan with payroll tax table updates, the latest basic personal claim amount changes are included in the Sage Simply Accounting payroll updates so that you will always have the latest claim amounts with which to update your employee records.

Filter and Assign New WCB Rate to Selected EmployeesBy modifying the WCB rate for a group of employees at the same time, you can save time and quickly update the WCB rate changes with less chance of errors.
In the Maintenance menu, select Update Employee WCB Rate. You can then choose to change the WCB rates by province or territory, by Sage Simply Accounting job categories, or by existing rates in your company data.
Produce Project Income Statement Report2This new report shows how your business is doing, enabling you to make better business decisions. The report provides summary and detail views of project revenues and expenses. You can quickly analyze project data from multiple angles, produce graphs, and see a side-by-side comparison of projects for meaningful analysis.
Generate Additional Payroll Reports2 These new reports give you insight into your payroll costs: how they are distributed over job categories, departments, and projects. The data reported can be represented in graphs, and contain summary and detail views.

File GST and HST Returns Online You can use Sage Simply Accounting to generate and save an electronic version of your GST/HST return (.tax file) that you upload to the Canada Revenue Agency using the Internet File Transfer service. This makes filing your tax returns more efficient, and reduces any reporting and filing mistakes.
Note: Sage Simply Accounting does not support the GST/HST online filing service for Revenu Québec.
Swipe Credit and Debit Cards Electronic processing of credit card payments has been updated to use Sage Exchange, a PA-DSS certified payment processing application. If you are processing credit card payments, you should ensure you are PCI compliant to avoid fines and fees.
Sage Exchange also supports card swipe readers1. Swiping credit or debit cards through a terminal device have lower associated transaction fees, and lowers the risk of fraud, speeds up data entry, and reduces the transaction processing time. Synchronization with Sage Billing Boss Sage Billing Boss (www.billingboss.com) is an online invoicing tool designed for small businesses. Synchronize with Billing Boss is an efficient way to synchronize Billing Boss customers, invoices, and receipts with Sage Simply Accounting. Customers, invoices, and receipts can be created or adjusted in Billing Boss and then automatically added or updated in the Sage Simply Accounting company data.2
Support for Multi-Character Search in Search Windows When searching for customers, vendors, inventory items, etc in their respective search windows, the results are automatically filtered according to the characters entered so you can quickly find what you need. For example, if you have a customer with the name Joe Smith, you could enter JO and the results filter out any names that begin with JA, JI, etc and go directly to the customers with names starting with JO.
Maintain Display Settings for Multiple Monitors If you move your Sage Simply Accounting data between computers that either have a single monitor or multiple monitors as well as different configurations, you can do so easily without having windows disappear off-screen.
QuickBooks®-to-Sage Simply Accounting Conversion Wizard The QuickBooks-to-Sage Simply Accounting Conversion Wizard has been updated to easily convert company data from Quickbooks 2010 into a Sage Simply Accounting company file.
File T5018 Returns OnlineIn this new version of Sage Simply Accounting, you can create a T5018 return file that you can upload to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) using the Internet File Transfer service. This allows you to comply with Canada Revenue Agency's new mandatory electronic filing requirements where a filing of more than 50 returns must be filed electronically.
If you are printing on T5018 forms, your company and your contractors' CRA business numbers are also now printed correctly on the forms.
Support for Additional T4 and RL-1 Codes This version of Sage Simply Accounting supports these additional codes for T4 slips: code 71 for Status Indian employees, code 85 for employee-paid premiums for private health services plans, code 31 for special work site, and code 33 for medical travel assistance. In addition, code R for Status Indian employees is also supported for Relevé 1 slips.
Store T4 and RL-1 Summary and Online Filing Information When you print T4 slips or file them electronically, you can enter or change the Payroll Account Number in the same window that is used to print or file T4 slips. Sage Simply Accounting also saves all the business and contact information entered and displays them in the RL-1 window. This ensures the correct business and contact information is used in repeated filings.4
Hide the Corrections in Payroll Reports You can now choose to hide all payroll corrections in these payroll reports: Employee and Job Category Detail reports. To hide the corrections, in the Modify Report window for these reports, make sure the Show Corrections box is unselected.
Print Projects on Separate Pages in the Project Income Report In the Project Income Summary and Detail reports, you can choose to start printing each project on a new page or save paper by allowing the projects to print continuously. By default, Sage Simply Accounting prints each project starting on a new page.
To allow the projects to print continuously, on the File menu of each report, clear Separate Each Project on a New Page When Printed.

Report Inventory Transactions New reports available in this new version of Sage Simply Accounting Enterprise report on build of materials, item assemblies, inventory adjustments and transfers. Use these to track your inventory transactions more efficiently and easily.
Track Vendor Item Information You can now create associations between a vendor's item and your own inventory item. When creating purchase orders, quotes, or invoices, you can search for items using either your item number or vendor item number. Also, there is the option of using your item number or the vendor item number on the order, quote, or invoice. In addition, you can quickly see when you past purchased that item and how much you paid for it.
Indicate Project on Orders When creating orders and invoices for either sales or purchases, you can select a project for tracking purposes. If an order with an assigned project is converted to an invoice, the project remains assigned to the invoice and does not have to be selected once again. Use the new report, Project Allocated Orders, to quickly view any invoices or orders assigned to a project. You can also choose to view this information by inventory item, Project Allocated Orders by Inventory Item.
Track Budget Projects Across Fiscal Years With Sage Simply Accounting Enterprise, you now have the flexibility to budget information for a project for the current fiscal year and up to 4 future fiscal years. Create project reports that span across fiscal years for current or future budgeting purposes.
Track Salaried Employee Work With Time Slips To ensure accurate reporting, billing, and payment, you can now record hourly payroll expenses of a salaried employee for a project on time slips.
Track Contractor Work With Time Slips In Sage Simply Accounting Enterprise, you can now track the work performed by contractors in time slips and automatically add this information to purchase invoices. This allows you to easily reconcile contractor invoices with your records in Sage Simply Accounting.
To begin using this feature, create a new vendor record for the contractor, and turn on the contractor status in the record. The new Time and Billing Purchases reports list the time spent on activities, amounts related to contractor time slips and purchase invoices, and activities performed grouped by customer or activity. You can use these reports to reconcile purchase invoices that your receive from contractors with your records in Sage Simply Accounting.
Streamlined Installation Wizard Simply Accounting has simplified the installation wizard by reducing the number of steps in the installation process. The wizard also provides more guidance to help you through the installation process, including notes about how to install the software on systems that use a firewall.
Improved Sales and Purchases Windows The re-designed Sales and Purchases windows are more user-friendly, and allow you to enter information more quickly and efficiently.
New Simply Accounting Troubleshooting Tool The new Simply Accounting Troubleshooter helps you understand and recover from common Connection Manager issues. To access the Simply Accounting Troubleshooter, on your desktop, open the Start menu and select Simply Accounting Troubleshooter from the Simply Accounting program group. Note: The Simply Accounting Troubleshooter is not available on Linux.

Easier Access to Balances and Totals From the Latest Transaction Date By default, total sums and balances on the Home Window are now calculated using the latest transaction date. You can still display balances by session date if you select Calculate Record Balances in Home Window Lists by Session Date as a user preference.
Preparing ROE Forms for Web Submission ( Payroll Only) You can now create a bulk ROE file in Simply Accounting which allows you to prepare more than one ROE form and submit them to the ROE Web site in a single draft file. You can review, modify, and print these ROE forms before they are submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency. For those who are not familiar with how to complete the ROE forms, Simply Accounting provides the appropriate help with each field in the form.

The upgrade for Sage Simply Accounting Basic 2007 or Sage Simply Accounting 2008 is now Sage 50 Pro Accounting. We have transitioned away from calling any of the products "Basic" because the product just isn't basic anymore. In 2008, we dropped the term "Basic" and since 2009 we have added "Pro" which better reflects the level of accounting and business management tools available in the product.
If you're upgrading from Sage Simply Accounting Pro 2007 or earlier versions, you will either need to select Sage 50 Premium Accounting or Sage 50 Quantum Accounting.
Sage 50 Premium Accounting and Sage 50 Quantum Accounting are the only products that support multiple users. Sage 50 Premium Accounting supports up to 4 user licenses and Sage 50 Quantum Accounting supports up to 40 user licenses in increments of 5.
If you have multiple users, you should consider upgrading to either Sage 50 Premium Accounting or Sage 50 Quantum Accounting products.
You should upgrade to Sage 50 Premium Accounting if you only have 4 or less users.1 If you have more than 4 user licenses, then we encourage you to look at Sage 50 Quantum Accounting. Sage 50 Premium Accounting will support up to 4 users, whereas Sage 50 Quantum Accounting supports up to 40 user licenses.1
No. The past "Basic" product is now positioned as Sage 50 Pro Accounting because it provides all the tools you need to accelerate the growth of your business.
Sage 50 First Step Accounting is our single-user entry level accounting software package for entrepreneurs, small or home-based business owners who require a simplified accounting software package. If you are currently using pen and paper method or a spreadsheet program, this is a great place to start. This product doesn't have payroll or inventory management functionality. It provides easy to use tools to track revenues, expenses, and tax.
