Sales strong for February
According to recent data from Statistics Canada, February was a good month for many businesses across the nation. Total retail sales increased to $39.5 billion, up 0.8 percent from January and 1.5 percent from the same time last year. General merchandise stores saw the greatest rise at 2.8 percent over the previous month, while sales at gas stations showed the second most significant growth at 1.9 percent. Electronics and appliance stores ranked third with 1.3 percent improvement.
The organization noted that higher retail sales materialized in seven of the 11 subsectors measured, and many provinces also reaped benefits. In Alberta, gains in terms of dollars rose for the third time in four months at 2.2 percent. Ontario and Quebec continued their two-month improvement streaks, and Manitoba was able to completely offset declines it experienced in December and January.
The challenge now for Canadian retailers is to keep up the momentum.
